With the development of science and technology and the improvement of security awareness, more and more sensor detection technologies are used in the security market. Traditional security methods use active and passive sensors for detection and realize applications such as sound monitoring, video monitoring, infrared alarm, and access control identification. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging, LiDAR) is an intelligent sensor for active environmental perception. LiDAR has obvious advantages in the field of security, has a wide range of application scenarios, and plays an important role in urban security monitoring and industrial security monitoring.

LiDAR Features

Compared with traditional cameras and passive infrared detection technology, LiDAR is not limited by conditions such as lighting environment and target characteristics and has a strong anti-interference ability. Compared with traditional radar technologies such as millimeter wave and microwave radar, LiDAR has a high resolution, and can accurately obtain the target distance, speed, and other information.

In addition, the particularity of the security monitoring field has some special requirements for LiDAR hardware design, performance indicators, and software algorithms: perimeter defense in sensitive areas requires a high detection rate and low false alarm rate. The light source in the monitoring environment for target protection is required to be concealed and is safe for the human eye. Building protection under harsh conditions is required to be stable and reliable, and the protection level is high.

The main differences between different technical systems of LiDAR include the ranging scheme, scanning method, and light source selection. These three aspects directly determine the core index parameters such as human eye safety, detection performance, and scanning field of view, and those are the key to low-cost mass-produced consumer-grade security LiDARs. The future development trend of the security industry will be all-round and all-weather “intelligent identification – intelligent early warning – real-time processing”, which requires the system to be more intelligent and integrated while having high performance. Combining LiDAR technology with artificial intelligence and mobile Internet technologies can realize the diversified development of security monitoring technology and products.

Security LiDAR Features

As the “eye” of intelligent security monitoring, the excellent feature of security LiDAR lies in security protection. First, it can detect intrusion targets, and at the same time, it can make security warnings; secondly, it has a high-security level, which meets the requirements of human eye safety and concealment of light sources; finally, it has a high protection level and can work stably and reliably in harsh environments.

LiDAR for railway Security Monitoring

Based on the physical parameters, such as distance, speed, and angle, security LiDAR can calculate the orientation, distance, width, and depth of the target in real time, and is used in different types of security monitoring scenarios. Now security LiDAR has been widely used in the fields of perimeter protection, industrial monitoring, intrusion warning, and cultural relics protection.

For intrusion targets in different security monitoring scenarios, security LiDAR has a high detection rate, which can judge the attributes of intrusion targets, determine location information, and give early warnings. The intrusion target in the security monitoring application scenario is mainly people, to a certain extent, the security LiDAR is required to meet the requirements of the concealment of the light source and the safety of the human eye, to realize the concealment protection and security monitoring of the detection target.

To cope with the ever-changing complex environment, integrators and end customers in the field of security monitoring pay more attention to the detection accuracy of intrusion targets, such as identification effect and positioning accuracy, as well as low false alarm rate and false alarm rate. However, the key factor affecting the missed detection rate and false alarm rate of security LiDAR is not the measurement accuracy, but the stable and reliable anti-interference ability and protection ability.

Traditional LiDAR

Traditional LiDARs are mostly used in high-precision engineering surveying and industrial surveying and other industries. The ranging accuracy can reach the millimeter level, while the angle measuring accuracy is generally 0.001° or even lower. It adopts a multi-wire harness mechanical structure. With the loss of internal moving parts, the service life is reduced, the maintenance cost is increased, and the stability is not good, which greatly limits the promotion and application of LiDAR in the field of security monitoring.

Traditional surveying and mapping LiDARs are usually bulky and expensive, their large-scale application in the security monitoring field is restricted, and the market demand for lightweight and low-cost LiDARs is increasing. Compared with traditional LiDARs, MEMS, Flash, and OPA LiDARs have advantages such as small size, lower cost, and good stability, which make mass production possible. The security LiDAR products of manufacturers are mature 2D single-line LiDARs, which are widely used in the industrial field and occupy the mainstream of the security monitoring market. In the security field, the measurement accuracy of the LiDAR is not high, the measurement accuracy is generally at the centimeter level, and the angle measurement accuracy is about 0.1°. In recent years, many high-performance, low-cost solid-state LiDARs launched by LiDAR companies have gradually become indispensable products in the field of LiDAR intelligent security monitoring applications.

Application Trends

At present, with the expansion and extension of security applications in the fields of smart homes, smart transportation, and smart city, the market demand for consumer-grade security LiDAR is getting higher and higher. However, the high price of LiDAR is still the bottleneck of industrial application. In addition to the pursuit of key performance indicators such as large field of view, high resolution, and long-range detection, the technical cost and application method should be more conducive to the promotion and popularization of the market.

With the iterative innovation of LiDAR technology and the upgrading of consumer demand in the security monitoring industry, LiDAR will develop in the direction of serialization, miniaturization, solid-state, chip-based, and multi-source integration.

Technical Features Neuvition LiDARs

LiDAR for Security Monitoring

Neuvition LiDARs are immune to changes in lighting conditions and work 24/7. When the lighting conditions are too poor and the intrusion object is too far away from the camera, LiDAR technology can effectively make up for the lack of camera vision technology.

More importantly, through our AI algorithm, we can intelligently analyze the point cloud data output by LiDAR, and then determine whether the intruding object is a human or an animal, leaf, or other interfering objects, to effectively reduce the false detection rate.
